Veterans at Powerhouse Racing

Rene Mejivar

“The Powerhouse Patriot program fosters community and a sense of belonging.”

To me being a Powerhouse Patriot allows me to persevere through training challenges with a supportive community. Structure and consistency through the Patriot program provides not only physical wellness but a mental outlet. The ability to share a triathlon journey with fellow patriots all working towards self-improvement is paramount for a cohesive community.

Rod Kanard

“After serving as a U.S. Marine, I found my sense of purpose in triathlons and training with Powerhouse. The camaraderie and shared goals remind me of my time in the Corps, providing the positive accountability I missed. Endurance sports like triathlon have improved my mental health and quality of life, and I believe other veterans could benefit from joining Powerhouse Patriots.”

Annie Spriggins

“Hello. My name is Annie and I ‘m a lifelong runner with over 35 years of running experience. I started running track in junior high, competed through high school, and earned a college offer before life led me away from the sport. I restarted running in the police academy and, as a police officer and later a homicide investigator. I used running to stay fit and clear my mind. Encouraged by friends, I raced 5Ks and 10Ks and completed my first marathon in 2000. After a muscle injury I took up cycling and rode with local groups. A teammate suggested I try both sports. Introduced to Coach Johnny at a friend’s birthday, I joined the Patriot Program at Powerhouse. Under Coach J’s patient guidance and tailored modifications—he even trains alongside the group—my times and fitness have significantly improved. I am passionate about encouraging others to discover the physical and mental benefits of running and multisport training.”

Shawn Davenport

In the years I have spent training and racing with Powerhouse, I have not only become a better athlete but I have also found a sense of purpose in my local community that makes me proud.

“While serving on active duty as a Marine Sergeant, maintaining fitness was essential for my career. Post-service, I struggled without physical goals, which had a negative impact on my mental health. Discovering the challenges of triathlon restored my sense of purpose, mirroring the camaraderie and accountability I experienced in the Corps. Training with Powerhouse has been incredibly fulfilling, and I believe many veterans could benefit from endurance sports like triathlon, with Powerhouse Patriots providing perfect support.”

Terry Winkler

“After retiring from the Texas Air National Guard in 2015, I struggled with the loss of structure and gained over 20 lbs, experiencing back issues and poor eating habits. Joining Powerhouse in 2019 helped me set and achieve fitness goals, like completing a 70.3 Triathlon. The program improved my health, reducing back pain and weight, and sharpening my mind. The support from Coach Johnny and the Powerhouse community made training enjoyable. This experience even inspired my wife to participate in 5Ks. Powerhouse has helped me adopt a sustainable healthy lifestyle, providing camaraderie and structure similar to military life.”
